Morning: Biennial Seed Saving: How to Over-winter and Save Seed from your Favourite Biennials

Monday, August 14

9:30am – 12:00pm

Location: Small Spade Farm, Stirling, ON

Small Spade Farm has been running a CSA in Stirling, Ontario since 2013. Using heirlooms are central to Lauren and Eric’s farming philosophy, and they have specialized in growing heirloom vegetables for their CSA members on their 7-acre certified organic farm. In past years, they have experimented with seed production of heirloom vegetables and in 2014, they joined Seeds of Diversity’s  Vegetable Seed Producers Network  to trial and grow a number of different biennial crops for seed. Come learn about different methods of storage for biennial crops (both in the field and out) and how to integrate biennial seed production into your market garden operation.

Afternoon: Growing Seed to Support Your Market Garden

Monday, August 14

1:30pm – 4:30pm

Location: Chick-a-biddy Acres, Hastings, ON

Chick-a-biddy Acres has a long history in the farming community in the Kawarthas, as an early CSA in the region 17 years ago. Sherry Patterson is one of the most experienced market gardeners in Ontario, and in the past few years she has been integrating seed production into her farming operation. Through working with the Vegetable Seed Producers Network, Sherry is adapting different varieties of pepper, squash, and lettuce into her market garden. If you’ve been considering integrating seed crops as part of your market garden operation, for sale or for on-farm use, join us on August 14th to learn how Chick-a-biddy Acres is meeting the challenge!
